What is Tech Neck?
BY
Gregory Beale

'Tech neck' refers to neck strain from excessive use of electronic devices like smartphones and computers. This strain is caused by frequently bending the neck into a forward and downward position, leading to symptoms like neck pain, stiffness, headaches, and potential long-term effects like spinal curvature changes and nerve damage.

To alleviate tech neck, consider these approaches:

  • Ergonomic Setup: Keep your device screens at eye level to avoid bending your neck. Consider your ergonomics at work/home as well. If you work on a laptop, get an external keyboard and mouse and make sure your eyes are at the top of the screen.
  • Frequent Breaks: Implement the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Neck Strengthening and Stretching: A few times a day, Perform neck exercises and stretches, such as tilting and rotating your neck, to relieve tension.
  • Mindful Posture: Maintain a posture with a straight back and aligned ears over shoulders. Reduced Screen Time: Limit the duration of device use and be conscious of your neck position while using them.

Adopting these practices can help in managing tech neck symptoms and promoting better spinal health.
