What is Tech Neck?
BY
Gregory Beale

Tech neck refers to neck strain caused by excessive use of electronic devices like smartphones and computers. This condition occurs when the neck is frequently bent forward and downward, leading to symptoms such as neck pain, stiffness, headaches, and, in severe cases, changes in spinal curvature and nerve damage.

Tips to Manage Tech Neck:

  • Ergonomic Setup: Keep your device screens at eye level to prevent neck bending. Consider your ergonomics at work or home—use an external keyboard and mouse with your laptop, and ensure the top of your screen is at eye level.
  • Frequent Breaks: Take short breaks every 20-30 minutes to stand up, stretch, or briefly walk around to reduce strain and maintain overall well-being.
  • Neck Strengthening and Stretching: Include neck exercises and stretches, such as gentle tilts and rotations, a few times a day to help alleviate tension.
  • Mindful Posture: Maintain a posture with a straight back and aligned ears over shoulders.
  • Reduce Screen Time: Limit your device usage and be mindful of your neck position during screen time.

By adopting these strategies, you can effectively manage tech neck symptoms and support better spinal health.
